When visiting President Dwight Eisenhower's Gettysburg, Pennsylvania farm recently I was reminded of how much First Lady Mamie Eisenhower loved the color pink. It was evident in the pink chandaliers throughout the farmhouse, pink cottonballs in the bathroom and in the Eisenhowers' bedroom. According to seamstress Lillian Parks, who wrote a book about her years working in the White House: "Pink and fluffy were what we became in the White House. Pink crept into the dining room table--even pink food." (My Thirty Years Backstairs at the White House, 1961). The color became so popular during the Eisenhower administration that a popular shade of it was dubbed "Mamie Pink". Care to guess the color of Mamie's inaugural gown?
